Background and purpose: Lifestyle refers to a pattern of living shaped by the interactions between life circumstances and an individual’s behavior, influenced by cultural factors and personal characteristics. The lifestyle of older adults affects their mental and physical health, alters their communication patterns, participation in social activities, and overall quality of life. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the lifestyle of older adults.
Materials and methods: A descriptive-analytical study was conducted on 420 older adults over 60 years of age without cognitive impairments in the city of Gorgan. A total of 10 parks and 11 mosques were identified in the city. Sampling was carried out using a multi-stage stratified method. Data were collected using a demographic information checklist and the Healthy Lifestyle Questionnaire for Iranian older adults. Lifestyle was evaluated based on scores categorized into three levels: unfavorable, average, and favorable. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26 and logistic regression.
Results: The mean age of the participants was 70 ± 8 years. Among the older adults, 58.6% were female, 69.8% were married, and 52.3% were housewives. Most participants (56.6%) had an education level of illiterate or primary education. Regarding lifestyle, no participants were classified as having an unfavorable lifestyle; 38.8% had an average lifestyle, and 61.2% had a favorable lifestyle. Multivariate analysis revealed that lifestyle was significantly associated with marital status, ethnicity, and education level (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: The results indicated that the majority of older adults had a favorable lifestyle. Lifestyle education programs should be tailored to the cultural context of each ethnic group and consider the factors that influence lifestyle.
