Background and purpose: There is paucity of information about men`s experiences of fathering and their roles and responsibilities in Iran. This study was designed to explore fatherhood based on Iranian fathers’ view. Materials and methods: In a qualitative phenomenological study, 17 first time fathers were recruited who had one healthy infant and were living in Qom. A semi structured questionnaire was completed in deep structured interviews to explore men’s experiences of fatherhood. Data was analyzed by smith`s interpretative phenomenology analysis. Sampling was performed using purposeful sampling and continued until data saturation was achieved. Results: According to the results, father is a man who enters a new phase of life following the birth of his child. It is necessary for fathers to gain essential knowledge about parenting and managing the new situation by hardworking, good-temper, forgiveness, dedication, and patience. These could help them in accepting the responsibility of supporting and caring their child. Conclusion: Participants in this study identified themselves responsible for wellbeing and supplying the child’s needs at present and in future. They also believed in active participation in childrearing. Considering this inner interest, training programs and ample information are necessary to help fathers in accepting and performing their responsibilities.
