Conflict of Interest Policy
The Journal of Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of transparency and integrity within its peer review and publication processes. In alignment with the guidelines set forth by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the journal mandates that all authors disclose any potential conflicts of interest that could compromise the objectivity of their work.
1. Author Responsibilities and Disclosure of Conflicts of Interest
All authors are obligated to disclose any financial, personal, or professional relationships that could potentially influence, or be perceived to influence, the content of their manuscript. This encompasses, but is not limited to, financial relationships such as funding, employment, consultancy, stock ownership, honoraria, paid expert testimony, and other financial interests that may lead to bias. Furthermore, authors must disclose personal relationships, academic interests, or any other factors that could result in a conflict of interest.
Conflicts of interest must be explicitly declared in both the cover letter submitted alongside the manuscript and in the dedicated Conflict of Interest section at the end of the manuscript. The cover letter should clearly outline any potential conflicts, providing transparency for the editors and reviewers. The Conflict of Interest section in the manuscript should explicitly state whether conflicts exist, and, if applicable, provide a detailed description of them.
If no conflicts of interest exist, authors must explicitly declare:
“The authors declare no conflict of interest.”
Articles will not be considered for publication unless all potential conflicts of interest are thoroughly disclosed.
2. Types of Potential Conflicts of Interest
Conflicts of interest may arise from various sources, including:
- Financial Relationships: Any financial interests that could influence the research, including funding, consultancy, employment, stock ownership, patents, or other financial stakes.
- Personal Relationships: Close familial or personal relationships that may introduce bias or create the perception of bias.
- Academic and Intellectual Interests: Conflicts resulting from professional rivalries, intellectual property concerns, or academic competition.
- Other Conflicts: Institutional, political, or other relationships that might influence, or appear to influence, the research process.
It is the author’s responsibility to disclose all potential conflicts, regardless of whether they perceive these relationships to affect or have the potential to affect their work.
3. Disclosure of Project Funding and Sponsor Involvement
Research funded by external sources—such as commercial organizations, private foundations, or government agencies—must disclose the role of the sponsor in the study. This includes the sponsor's involvement in study design, data collection, data analysis, manuscript writing, or the decision to submit the manuscript for publication. If the sponsor did not participate in any of these aspects, this must be clearly stated. In cases where the sponsor has a financial or proprietary interest in the study’s outcome, authors must affirm their independence in accessing and analyzing the data.
4. Editor and Reviewer Conflict of Interest
To maintain impartiality, editors of the Journal of Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences will not select reviewers who have conflicts of interest, including those from the same institution or those with personal or professional ties to the authors. Reviewers must disclose any potential conflicts of interest that could bias their evaluation of the manuscript. If a conflict of interest exists, the reviewer must recuse themselves from the review process.
Similarly, editors must avoid any personal, professional, or financial involvement in the manuscripts they handle. Editors with conflicts must recuse themselves from making editorial decisions regarding that manuscript.
5. Editorial Decision Making
The editorial team is committed to ensuring that all decisions regarding manuscript acceptance are based solely on the scientific merit of the manuscript. Editors and reviewers are required to disclose any potential conflicts of interest and, if necessary, recuse themselves from the evaluation process. The journal will take appropriate measures to ensure the impartial and fair evaluation of all manuscripts.
6. Transparency and Accountability
The Journal of Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences is dedicated to ensuring full transparency in the editorial and peer review processes. Authors, reviewers, and editors are obligated to disclose any potential conflicts of interest to uphold the credibility of the journal and the research it publishes. By adhering to these guidelines, the journal guarantees that all potential conflicts of interest are disclosed and considered, thereby maintaining trust in the peer review process and the integrity of the scientific record.
Conflict of Interest
At the end of the manuscript, authors must include a "Conflict of Interest" section, where they explicitly declare any financial, personal, or professional relationships that might pose a conflict with the research presented. If no conflict of interest exists, the authors must explicitly state:
"The authors declare no conflict of interest."
