This research aims at studying the prevalence of the causes of retinal detachment in the patients admitted to Tabriz Nikokari a hospital. Materials and methods: Ïn a descriptive study, 300 patients with retinal detachment admitted to Tabriz Nikokari Hospital from 2007 to 2009 were studied. Demographic information, history of eye diseases, causes of retinal detachment and the types of treatments in all patients were recorded. Results: Ïn this study, 300 patients with retinal detachment were enrolled including 207(69%) men and 93(31%) women with the mean age of 42.56 ± 17.1 years. Ïn 52.7% of the patients the right eye was involved and 47.3% suffered from retinal detachment in the left eye. Ônly 27.3% of the patients had myopia and 37% of them had undergone a previous cataract surgery. Âmong patients, 28.7% had a history of eye trauma. There were significant differences between the two genders in myopia, diabetes and trauma (P< 0.05). Çonclusion: The findings demonstrated that factors such as diabetes, patients’ age, male gender, myopia and the previous cataract surgery existed in the history of the patients with retinal detachment. Ït is concluded that supplementary evaluations and intervention in the appropriate time can be helpful in decreasing the retinal detachment rate in these patients.
