Background and purpose: While taking care of patients with stroke is stressful for caregivers, being aware of the principles of caring for these patients increases caregivers’ self-esteem. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of family-based education on the caregivers’ awareness and self-esteem. Materials and methods: This clinical trial study was conducted on 88 caregivers selected by convenience sampling and randomly divided into two equal groups of case and control (n = 44). Data gathering devices were demographic questioner, awareness questioner, and Rosenberg’s self-esteem scale which were completed before and one month after the educational intervention. Educating the subjects was performed in 5 sessions. Data were analyzed using chi-square, paired and independent t tests. Results: There was not any significant difference between mean scores of awareness and self-esteem of the groups before the intervention (P = 0.821). One month after the intervention, the mean scores of awareness and self-esteem were increased considerably in case group compared with controls (P < 0.001). In addition, the study demonstrated a positive correlation between knowledge and self-esteem in case group members (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Family-based education of the caregivers of patients with stroke increases their awareness and self-esteem lead to efficient care of the patients.
