Background and purpose :Hepatitice C virus is the main reason of blood borne hepatitis. The Thalassemia major patients who one the frequent blood receiving are the risk group. Many of the patients will pass in to chronic stage with liver cirrhosis and Hepato cellular carcinoma is the out come of this infection. α interferon have been used for the treatment of active chronic of hepatitice C infection since 1990. some of the patients referring to Boali sina Treatment center were treated by this method.
Material and methods : First , in a descriptive study most of the referred patients were studied for the presence of Hepatitice C virus antibody byof ELISA , second generation (diagnostic biotechnology). After recording of basic characteristics and clinical finding and getting permission from the patients and their parents ferritin, liver function test i-e , transaminase , PTT , PT. And in some of the patients biopsy of liver was done .Liver pathology was evaluated on the basis of knodell score. The active chronic hepatitice were treated with α- interferone (Interon Sandose). Drug was administered subcutaneously thrice a weak , in the does of three million units treatment was done for six months. The clinical and laboratory finding were determined by weekly CBC and monthly measurment of AST , ALT. Thyroid function test was performed at least twice. Response to treatment was evaluated by three methods as following 1. Measurement of transminase variation 2. Repeating liver biopsy in some patients 3. Determination of viremia by PCR method For correlations we used pearson , for comparison of qualitative variables , Mc Newar amd for ferritin levels we used paired T-test
