Background and purpose: Hypertension is one of the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases that is common in the elderly. Self-esteem is also one of the psychological factors that affects the physical and mental health of the elderly. Lifestyle can also affect both factors of hypertension and self-esteem. However، the relationship between lifestyle and self-esteem in elderly people with hypertension has been less studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between lifestyle and self-esteem in elderly people with hypertension.
Materials and methods: In this descriptive- analytical study، 300 elders over the age of 60 who had no cognitive problems were selected from the health center in Sari city. The data collection tools included: demographic characteristics questionnaire، Iranian elderly lifestyle questionnaire، Rosenberg self-esteem questionnaire.
Results: The results showed that the Mean±SD age of the participants was 67.22 ± 2.92 years and most of the elderly (71.3 percent) had a moderate lifestyle. Also, the average self-esteem score in the elderly under study was (35.42 ± 4.43). The results showed that there was a significant direct relationship between lifestyle and self-esteem of elderly people with hypertension (P>0.001, r= -0.62).
Conclusion: Improving lifestyle is an important step in increasing self-esteem. It seems necessary to carry out educational-counseling interventions to improve the lifestyle of the elderly.
