Background and purpose: In clinical treatment of cancer, improving the efficacy of drugs and targeted drug delivery have always been a fundamental problem requiring more focused solutions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effects of copper nanoparticles in prostate normal and cancer cell lines.
Materials and methods: In this experimental study, different concentrations of copper nanoparticles (0, 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, and 600 μg) were prepared. Cell growth and oxidative stress in reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduced glutathione (GSH) were studied in prostate normal and cancer cell lines using MTT assay.
Results: Copper nanoparticles created toxicity in prostate normal cells due to release of ROS and reduction of glutathione reserves. Also, this mechanism inhibited the growth of cancer cells.
Conclusion: According to this study, copper nanoparticles induced toxicity in normal cells through oxidative stress pathway and inducing ROS and decreased the growth of normal cells. Also, copper nanoparticles inhibited the growth of cancer cells by the oxidative stress pathway. So, copper nanoparticles cannot be an effective drug in treatment of prostate cancer as they cause high toxicity in normal cells.
