Abstract:   (17 Views)
Background and purpose: Poisoning is one of the most common causes of patient attendance in emergency departments. The present study was designed to compare the patterns of poisoning among patients referred to the educational and medical centres affiliated with Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences during 2022–2023.
Materials and methods: In this retrospective descriptive study, the demographic, clinical, presenting symptoms, and type of poisoning information of all patients hospitalized with a diagnosis of poisoning in medical centers affiliated with Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences during 2022–2023 were examined using the Ministry of Health and Medical Education checklist available in the province's Medical Care Data Monitoring System (MCMC). The extracted data were analyzed using SPSS statistical software and summarized through descriptive statistics.
Results: The total number of patients during this time was 2,119, of whom 50.5% were men and 49.5% were women. In 2024, the number of cases reached 1,283, representing an increase of 53% compared with the previous year. The most common type of poisoning in both years was drug-related poisoning. The rate of poisoning due to rice pills and alcohol increased significantly in 2023, while poisoning caused by toxins and chemical agents showed a significant decline.
Conclusion: Given the more than 50% increase in poisonings in the province, and considering the high importance of this issue, there is a need for continuous and diverse studies in this field, improvements in cultural infrastructure, as well as appropriate educational and therapeutic measures to raise awareness and protect people from poisoning
