Abstract:   (249 Views)
Background and purpose: Maintaining oral hygiene in patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment is challenging due to brackets, wires, and other appliances, which may increase dental plaque accumulation, gingival inflammation, and the risk of caries. Therefore, effective educational strategies, when combined with modern reminder tools, may play an important role in improving oral health behaviours. Digital interventions, particularly smart reminder applications combined with visual educational materials, have been proposed as innovative approaches to enhance oral hygiene. This study aimed to evaluate the combined effects of a digital reminder program and educational videos on oral hygiene status in orthodontic patients.
Materials and methods: This semi-experimental study was conducted among 60 orthodontic patients aged 15 to 40 years who attended Semnan Dental School. Participants were allocated into intervention and control groups. In addition to receiving routine oral hygiene instructions, the intervention group received educational videos and used the Brush DJ application, which provided personalized daily reminders for toothbrushing, flossing, and mouthwash use. The control group received routine oral hygiene education alone. The TMQHPI index was recorded at baseline and after three months.
Results: The mean change in oral hygiene score was 1.13 ± 0.90 in the intervention group, compared with 0.71 ± 0.33 in the control group. The improvement in oral hygiene was significantly greater in the intervention group than in the control group (p = 0.001).
Conclusion: The combination of routine oral hygiene education with visual instruction and digital reminders was more effective in reducing dental plaque indices in orthodontic patients than routine education alone.
