Background and purpose: ospitals are the main units providing health care services during disasters, and their timely preparedness and provision of services play a vital role in reducing injuries and mortality. This study aimed to evaluate the safety of hospitals at Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences in dealing with disasters in 2023-2024.
Materials and methods : this cross-sectional, descriptive-analytical study, 40 hospitals under Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences (educational-medical centers, government, private, and medical centers under the supervision of the Social Security Organization and the Armed Forces) were evaluated in 2023 and 2024. Data were collected according to the Persian Hospital Safety Assessment Tool in Disasters, which includes 145 items in 3 general groups: structural safety, non-structural safety, and emergency and disaster management. The results were ranked and presented as scores in each component, overall score, readiness percentage, comparison with the overall average, and readiness rank based on four levels of scores.
Results: The safety status of Mazandaran medical centers in terms of emergency and disaster management, non-structural and structural dimensions was assessed in 2023 with 75.77 points in the managerial area, 72.02 points in the non-structural area, 69.21 points in the structural area and a total of 71.37 points, respectively. In 2024, with 75.10, 71.30 and 69.06 points in the emergency and disaster management, non-structural and structural dimensions and a total average of 71.09% points, it was placed at an average level.
Conclusion : The safety of hospitals in Mazandaran province in the face of accidents and disasters has an acceptable score. Although the condition of these hospitals is not critical, there is a need to integrate the allocation of sustainable financial resources for structural reinforcement with the updating of non-structural equipment and the simultaneous strengthening of management and educational structures.
