Background and purpose: Due to the rapid aging of the population worldwide, the health and care of older adults have become increasingly important public health concerns. Proper nutrition is essential for maintaining health and may be influenced by oral and dental health. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between oral and dental physical function and nutritional status among older adults attending dental clinics in Babolsar, Iran.
Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study, 300 older adults aged 60–84 years were recruited in Babolsar using convenience sampling according to the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected using a demographic information questionnaire, the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI), and the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA). The collected data were analysed statistically.
Results: The mean body mass index (BMI) and decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) scores were 25 ± 4.79 kg/m² and 16 ± 8.43, respectively. Depression and osteoporosis were the most common comorbidities, affecting 54.7% and 45.7% of participants, respectively, while Parkinson’s disease was the least common (7%). The mean oral and dental physical function score and nutritional status score were 17.21 ± 9.73 and 19.29 ± 6.26, respectively. Most participants were at risk of malnutrition, followed by those who were malnourished.
Conclusion: Malnutrition was observed among older adults with favorable educational and economic status, those who were retired and married, and those with family support. In addition, being a nonsmoker, better oral health, tooth brushing, and dental visits were accompanied by a favorable nutritional status, whereas higher DMFT and comorbidities were observed among older adults with malnutrition. However, after adjustment for related variables, oral and dental physical functioning was not aligned with the nutritional status of older adults.
