Background and purpose: Burn is an important life-threatening disturbance for human. The purpose of this study was reviewing natural products recommended by resources of Iranian traditional medicine (ITM) for treatment of burn.
Materials and methods: We investigated the books of philosophers of Iranian traditional medicine written sources from the 9th century AD with the words of "Hergh" and "Fire burn" were studied. Bibliography of sources, name of products (plant, animal or mineral), using methods, and the nature of the products were recorded. More details of these natural products were evaluated in recent databases with focusing on burn treatment.
Results: 89 natural products to treat burns were presented in 11 traditional written sources. 46.1% of the products were in more than one source. 76.4% of the products were of herbal origin, 15.7% of mineral origin, and 7.9% were of animal origin. Most of the presented products had cold and dry nature. 18% of Materia have been described to have amazing effect or to be extremely beneficial.
Conclusion: Some of reported products in the study are approved by the new standard and scientific methods but most of the cases are not. This is a suitable issue for researchers that would like work on Iranian traditional medicine.
