Abstract Statins are a group of drugs that prevent cholesterol building and reduce its concentration in blood by inhibiting the hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (HMG CoA r). There are evidences showing other properties including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-thrombotic effects of these agents. Some anti-osteoporotic effects have recently been added to these properties. However, these drugs have some side effects that mimic rheumatologic disorders such as lupus and myopathy. In this review article, the role of statins in rheumatologic disorders is discussed.
