Background and purpose: Implementing educational programs that enhance attitudes and foster positive psychological norms can play a major role in increasing fertility intentions. This study was conducted to compare two educational approaches, virtual learning and self-study, within premarital counseling in terms of their effects on the motivation of couples planning to have children.
Materials and methods: This interventional study was conducted among premarital couples referred to the Amir Kola Counseling Center in Mazandaran Province during the sampling period. A total of 110 eligible couples were included and randomly assigned to two groups: virtual learning and self-study. Educational packages, based on the educational booklet developed by the Ministry of Health, were provided to the self-study group. For the virtual group, educational videos were prepared using the same content and were delivered via WhatsApp Messenger once a week for four consecutive weeks. Data collection instruments included a demographic questionnaire and Miller’s Motivation to Have Children Scale. These tools were administered before the intervention, four weeks after the pre-test, and two months after the intervention (as follow-up). Data were analyzed using SPSS software, version 23.
Results: The within-group analysis of the dimensions of positive motivation for childbearing showed that, over time, both groups experienced a significant increase across all dimensions of positive motivation to have children (P < 0.001).
Conclusion: Virtual training within premarital counseling had a significant positive effect on couples’ motivation for childbearing.
