Background and purpose: Personalized medicine approaches, such as those described in Persian medicine based on individual mizaj (temperament), may provide unique insights into the management of glaucoma. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of different mizaj types among patients with glaucoma.
Materials and methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study included patients with glaucoma who were referred to ophthalmology clinics. Demographic information, including age, sex, and educational level, was collected. Participants' temperament was assessed using Dr. Salmannejad's Temperament Assessment Questionnaire. A P-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: A total of 178 patients participated in the study, with a mean age of 62.48 ± 11.62 years. Of the participants, 52.2% were male. Most patients (68%) were diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), followed by angle-closure glaucoma (12.9%) and pseudoexfoliation syndrome (12.4%). The most common temperament was cold and dry (23%; n = 41), followed by simple cold (16.9%; n = 30), cold and wet (16.3%; n = 29), simple dry (9.6%; n = 17), hot and dry (8.4%; n = 15), simple hot (7.9%; n = 14), simple wet (7.3%; n = 13), hot and wet (6.7%; n = 12), and moderate (3.9%; n = 7).
Conclusion: Most patients with glaucoma had a cold and dry temperament. Therefore, considering the principles of Persian medicine and the naturally hot and wet temperament of the eye, to maintain health and manage these patients effectively, measures that increase coldness and especially dryness should be avoided. In other words, people with a cold and dry temperament are more susceptible to this disease and, for prevention, these people should avoid measures that increase coldness and dryness, such as lack of sleep, regular consumption of cold and dry foods, and similar practices: more than others.
