Background and purpose: Sexual self-concept is an important factor in various behavioural domains; therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the relationship between sexual self-concept and marital satisfaction as a key functional component of marital relationships.
Materials and methods: A comprehensive online search of national and international databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, SID, Magiran, and the Google Scholar search engine, was conducted for the period 2004 to 2025 by two researchers independently using MeSH keywords. Agreement on the study selection was subsequently assessed by a third researcher. After reviewing the eligible studies and extracting the required information, data analysis was performed using STATA software. The pooled mean effect size was estimated using a fixed-effect model, taking into account the significance of the I² index.
Results: A total of 1,040 participants were included in the analysis. According to the fixed-effect model, the total effect size was estimated at 0.489, which was statistically significant (P< 0.001). These findings indicate a significant positive relationship between the variables studied.
Conclusion: According to the results of the study, a higher level of sexual self-concept, as an individual resource, is closely associated with relationship well-being among married couples. Therefore, addressing the multiple dimensions of sexual self-concept and implementing health-based programmes aimed at enhancing positive aspects and modifying negative aspects of sexual self-concept may improve sexual functioning in married couples. In turn, this may enhance marital satisfaction and contribute to psychological and emotional well-being at both family and societal levels.
