Background and purpose: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, and despite treatment advances that have increased survival, the long-term consequences of treatment, particularly for sexual health, remain a serious challenge. Unmet sexual concerns and educational needs are major contributors to reduced quality of life in these women. This study aimed to develop a standardised questionnaire to assess the sexual health concerns and educational needs of breast cancer survivors.
Materials and methods: This methodological study was conducted in 2024 among 20 breast cancer survivors referred to Sari Imam Khomeini Hospital using convenience sampling. Initial items were generated through a comprehensive literature review and discussions among the research team. Content validity was assessed qualitatively (expert feedback on clarity and relevance) and quantitatively, using the Content Validity Index (CVI) and Content Validity Ratio (CVR), by 11 experts. Face validity was assessed via the Impact Score, using the same 20 survivors. Reliability was assessed by calculating Cronbach's alpha and the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), using a two-week test-retest interval.
Results: The final questionnaire comprised two sections: Sexual Health Concerns (15 items) and Educational Needs (15 items). CVI values for all items exceeded 0.79, and CVR values exceeded 0.59. Impact Scores ranged from 4.10 to 5.00. Cronbach's alpha was 0.94 for the Sexual Health Concerns scale and 0.96 for the Educational Needs scale, and the ICC values were 0.83 and 0.88, respectively, indicating good temporal stability of the instrument.
Conclusion: The developed questionnaire showed good validity and reliability in the preliminary psychometric stages. However, a larger sample size is necessary to confirm construct validity through factor analysis. Once the full psychometric evaluation is complete, this instrument could serve as a valuable tool in research and clinical settings.
