Abstract:   (28 Views)
Background and purpose: Self-care, defined as the ability to adapt and care for oneself in the face of physical, social, and emotional challenges, plays a key role in the health and well-being of both physicians and patients. Studies indicate that universities have been largely unsuccessful in promoting self-care among medical students and that comprehensive educational programmes on self-care remain lacking. Given that family medicine is among the most common and important career pathways for general medical students after graduation, exploring family physicians' experiences of self-care can provide valuable insights into the development and refinement of educational programmes in this area. Therefore, this study aimed to explore family physicians' perspectives on self-care education for undergraduate medical students.
Materials and methods: This qualitative study was conducted using a conventional content analysis approach. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with seven family physicians, selected through purposive sampling to achieve maximum diversity. Data analysis was performed using the conventional content analysis approach described by Hsieh and Shannon.
Results: Analysis of the interview transcripts yielded 109 initial codes, 23 subcategories, 8 categories, and 3 overarching dimensions. These dimensions included: (1) barriers and challenges to self-care in medicine; (2) the self-care needs and priorities of family physicians; and (3) educational planning for self-care in undergraduate medical education.
Conclusion: The findings of this study provide valuable insights for the development of self-care education for medical students as future family physicians. Self-care education should be embedded throughout the medical curriculum, from the basic medical sciences to postgraduate and continuing professional education.
