Background and purpose: Providing high-quality nursing care is considered one of the fundamental priorities of healthcare systems. Mindfulness has been recognized as an important factor in enhancing nurses’ performance and the quality of care they deliver. Nursing care, by its very nature, is closely intertwined with spirituality. Workplace spirituality can foster a sense of humanity within organizations, promote effective engagement with the community, and encourage environmental responsibility. Accordingly, the present study was conducted to examine the role of organizational spirituality and mindfulness in predicting the quality of nursing care in intensive care units (ICUs).
Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted between 2023 and 2024, included 227 nurses from intensive care units (ICUs), selected using stratified sampling from the educational and medical centers affiliated with Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences. Data were collected using the Mindfulness Questionnaire by Brown and Ryan (2003), the Organizational Spirituality Questionnaire by Ashmos and Duchon (2000), and the Nursing Care Quality Questionnaire by Zeraati and Masoudi Alavi (2014). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software version 22, employing descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and linear regression analyses.
Results: Based on multiple linear regression analysis, the nursing care quality score showed no statistically significant relationship with organizational spirituality (b= 0.08, P=0.578) or mindfulness (b=-0.17, P=0.375). However, among the demographic variables, project recruitment status was significantly associated with the nursing care quality score (b= 8.85, P= 0.036).
Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, organizational spirituality and mindfulness did not predict the quality of nursing care. However, among the demographic variables, the nursing care quality score was significantly associated with employment status, with project-based nurses demonstrating higher average nursing care quality scores compared to permanent staff.
